Description
Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III) (1786–1865). Pair of Japanese woodblock prints. The first print depicts two figures in ornate floral robes, signed Kochoro Toyokuni ga with red seals at the lower left. The second print portrays an interior veranda scene, with a cartouche at the bottom center signed Nanaju-kyu-o Toyokuni hitsu, which translates to the brush of the 79-year-old Toyokuni. It also includes carver and publisher marks identifying Watanabe and Enshuya Kamokichi (Ekame). Each sheet 14 3/4 x 10 1/4 inches.
Condition report:
The first print exhibits prominent foxing and dark staining in the upper right field and overall paper toning. The second print shows a small area of paper loss at the upper left corner and minor handling creases. Both prints are unframed and show general age-related wear and minor foxing.
