Description
Group of three Japanese woodblock prints, primarily featuring subjects from the mid-19th century Utagawa school. The collection includes two actor prints and one print from a thematic series. One print depicts two Kabuki actors identified by inscriptions as Gokuin Sen’uemon and Kaminari Shokuro, bearing a Toyokuni signature cartouche and publisher seal for Sasamata. The second print includes extensive calligraphic text above two figures and is signed Kokyotei Shu ga (an alias used by Utagawa Kunisada II) in a red cartouche, also featuring the Sasamata publisher seal. The third print is from the series Nana Komachi no uchi (Seven Komachi) and depicts the actor Ichimura Kakitsu; it is signed Nanaju-dai Toyokuni hitsu, indicating the brush of Toyokuni III (Kunisada) at the age of 70. This print includes the engraver seal Hori Ota Tashichi and the publisher seal Uonaya Eikichi. The prints are unframed and represent the standard oban size of the Edo and Meiji periods. 14 x 9 3/8 inches. Location: 14C
Condition report:
The prints show various signs of age and wear. Notable condition issues include overall toning of the paper, minor foxing, and staining throughout. Visible ink bleed-through is present on the verso of all sheets. The center print features a vertical paper reinforcement/repair on the reverse side. The edges show general wear, including minor thinning and small tears.
