Description
Two Japanese woodblock prints. The first depicts a group of women on a balcony overlooking a river at twilight. It includes a calligraphic inscription in the upper right referencing women’s customs and an artist’s signature with a red circular seal. The second is by Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III), signed Kunisada ga in the lower left. The subject is the kabuki actor Iwai Kumesaburo, as identified by the vertical inscription in the upper right. This print also displays a publisher’s mark and censor seals in the lower portion. Both prints are unframed. Larger print 14 x 9 1/2 inches. Location: 14C
Condition report:
Both prints exhibit significant signs of age, including overall toning, foxing, and staining. The actor print shows prominent vertical and horizontal creases and folds. There are handling marks, edge wear, and surface dirt present on both sheets.
