August Uncurated Summer Auction
Lot 309:
Description
This lot features a large-scale oil on stretched canvas, which is a contemporary copy of Pablo Picasso’s 1900 painting Le Moulin de la Galette. The composition captures the night scene at the Parisian dance hall, populated with figures in formal turn-of-the-century dress, including women in wide hats and men in top hats seated at tables or dancing. The painting is executed with heavy impasto and visible brushwork, especially in the lighter highlights and foreground details. The palette is dominated by dark greens and blacks, with saturated highlights of red, yellow, and white. No signature or date is visible on the face of the canvas. The work is housed in an ornate gilded frame with deep relief foliate and floral decorations. 41.5 x 63.75 (Sight). 49.5 x 71.75 (Frame). This lot is located offsite in Rumson, New Jersey and will be available for PICKUP ONLY. Specific pickup instructions including the address and available pickup dates and times will be provided shortly after the auction.
Condition report:
The painting is in good overall condition. Craquelure is present throughout the areas of heavier paint application, notably in the lower left section. The paint surface is stable and shows no evidence of loss or significant surface dirt. The gilded frame exhibits minor wear and small chips to the surface consistent with age and handling but remains structurally sound.
