Description

This late 19th-century French Louis XVI style marble-topped nightstand, or table de nuit, is constructed from mahogany and fruitwood with elaborate parquetry veneers. The piece features a green veined marble top above a single drawer and a cupboard door. The drawer is constructed with hand-cut dovetail joinery, and the lower cupboard compartment is lined with white porcelain. The exterior surfaces, including the drawer front, door, side panels, and lower shelf, are decorated with geometric diamond-pattern parquetry. The back panel displays book-matched mahogany veneer with light stringing inlay. The cabinet is supported by four tapered cylindrical legs joined by a lower shelf and terminating in brass sabots. Gilt metal hardware includes neoclassical corner mounts with laurel swags, a circular drawer pull, a small door knob, and a decorative frieze mount. This lot is located offsite in Rumson, New Jersey and will be available for PICKUP ONLY. Specific pickup instructions including the address and available pickup dates and times will be provided shortly after the auction.

Condition report:

The nightstand shows signs of age and use. There is significant veneer loss and splintering along the interior right-hand edge of the cupboard door. The parquetry surfaces on the lower shelf and side panels exhibit scattered light scratches and scuffs. The gilt metal mounts show minor tarnishing and surface oxidation. The green veined marble top remains in good condition with no visible cracks or chips.
