Description
A pair of Italian Rococo style parquetry bombe commodes manufactured for the American retailer W&J Sloane during the mid-to-late 20th century. Each three-drawer chest features a classic bombe form with a serpentine front and curved sides, standing on slender cabriole legs. The exterior surfaces are decorated with an intricate lattice parquetry pattern composed of walnut and mixed fruitwood veneers with cross-banded strips and burl-wood centers. The drawers are fitted with ornate cast metal leaf-and-scroll pulls. The drawer carcasses are constructed from a softwood secondary wood. The underside of the chests retains a paper retailer label for W. & J. Sloane Inc., Garden City, and a circular stamped mark reading Made in Italy. 20″ H x 18.5″ W x 10.5″ each.
Condition report:
Both chests show wear consistent with age and use. There are scattered small chips and losses to the veneer, primarily along the edges of the tops, drawer fronts, and corners. Minor surface scratches, scuffs, and small indentations are present throughout. Some separation is visible at the veneer joins on the tops. Drawer interiors show typical age-related darkening and light staining. Hardware exhibits a dark patina from oxidation.
