Lot 141:
Sold for: $350
Description
A pair of lidded urns produced by Mottahedeh. The vessels are crafted from a matte black stoneware, mimicking eighteenth-century black basalt, and feature extensive gilded relief decoration. Each urn has an ovoid body supported by a short pedestal foot on a square plinth. The Neoclassical ornamentation consists of gilded foliate swags connecting two types of medallions: one side depicts a profile portrait of a helmeted classical figure within a beaded border, and the reverse side features a smiling Bacchic mask. The lower portion of each urn is embellished with a band of gilded acanthus leaves. The removable, high-domed lids are decorated with gadrooned swirl patterns and topped with gilded pineapple finials. The underside of one plinth retains a gold foil label printed with the text A Mottahedeh design. 16″ H x 7.5″ W x 7.5″ D.
Location: 20C
Condition report:
The urns are in good overall condition. Minor rubbing and wear are present on the gilded surfaces, most notably on the bands encircling the pedestal feet. The matte black ceramic bodies exhibit fine, hair-thin crazing throughout. There is a light accumulation of dust within the recessed areas of the relief decoration. The underside of one plinth shows residual adhesive from a previous protective pad. No chips, cracks, or evidence of professional restoration were observed.
