Description
A neoclassical style border wall mirror featuring a central rectangular mirror plate enclosed by a mirrored border. The construction consists of matching outer and inner rectangular giltwood frames with carved leaf-and-dart decoration. The four corners of the mirrored border are accented with applied scrolling foliate and shell-form carvings. The frame is constructed of wood with a gold gilt finish over red bole and white gesso. 40″ H x 30″ W x 1″ D.
Condition report:
The gilt finish exhibits widespread wear including significant chipping and flaking that exposes the underlying red bole and white gesso. Several structural cracks are visible at the mitered corners. All mirror panels show extensive foxing and silvering loss appearing as dark mottled spots and clouding. A diagonal crack is present in the glass of an upper corner border panel. The paper backing is brittle and torn.
