Description

This pair of mid-20th-century commercial prints is after original drypoint etchings by the American Western artist Reinhold H. Palenske (1884–1954). Produced by the publisher Brown & Bigelow, these works utilize offset lithography to replicate the artist’s gestural line work and the soft, burred edges characteristic of the drypoint technique. The first print, titled Up the Trail, depicts a cowboy with a whip leading a pack train of horses up a steep mountain incline. The second print, titled Yosemite, portrays a solitary rider on horseback in the foreground of a landscape featuring Yosemite Falls. Both prints feature the artist’s printed signature R. H. Palenske in the lower right corner, with their respective titles in the lower left. The copyright mark C in a circle B&B USA is visible near the titles and signatures. The works are housed in cream-colored mats within simple dark-toned wooden frames. These reproductions do not exhibit a physical plate mark. Framed dimensions: 18 x 16 x 1 inches each.

Location: Bin 30

Condition report:

Both prints and their corresponding mats exhibit moderate overall toning and yellowing to the paper. The dark wood frames show minor surface wear, small nicks, and scuffs along the edges. On the reverse, the paper dust covers are punctured and torn. Hanging wires are present on both frames.
