Description
Leonard John Pearce (British, b. 1932). This maritime oil painting on board depicts the three-masted topsail schooner Sir Winston Churchill under full sail. The vessel is shown navigating through a dynamic, choppy sea with white-capped waves under an overcast, atmospheric sky. Two smaller sailboats are visible in the distance near the horizon. The work is signed L.J. Pearce in the lower right corner. The painting is housed in a polished bird’s-eye maple wood frame with a gilded inner fillet and an attached brass nameplate. The nameplate is inscribed: “SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL” / British Sail Training Association’s / 300 ton tops’l schooner. Built 1965. 17 x 13 inches (sight); 21 x 16.5 inches (frame).

Condition report:
The oil on board surface is in good overall condition with minor surface grime. Faint vertical lines corresponding to the support grain are visible in the sky and sea areas. The wood frame shows light wear and minor scuffing to the veneer. The brass nameplate has a dark mark or scratch over the first two letters of the ship name. The backing paper is intact, but the identification label on the reverse is torn and incomplete.
