Description

This large Japanese porcelain charger dates to the Meiji period (1868-1912). The vessel is decorated in a distinctive export style featuring raised lacquer and gilt application over a porcelain body. The reverse is decorated in underglaze blue with stylized flying birds separated by scrolling clouds. A paper label from Christie’s marked Lot 233 is affixed to the underside. No manufacturer marks or signatures are present on the porcelain body. 2 1/4″ H x 18″ diameter.

Condition report:

The charger exhibits significant losses and chipping to the lacquer and gilt overlay, particularly concentrated along the outer rim. There are general surface scuffs, scratches, and wear to the lacquer throughout the decorated surface. The reverse shows shelf wear to the unglazed foot rim and scattered kiln grit from the production process. No chips, cracks, or restorations are visible to the underlying porcelain body.
