Description

A pair of Japanese late Meiji period ceramic vessels featuring a dark brown, heavily textured bark ground with hand-painted polychrome enamel decoration. One vessel is a globular, wide-mouthed jar featuring a kingfisher perched on a branch among blooming hibiscus-style flowers, with a butterfly depicted on the reverse and a geometric fret-pattern border at the shoulder. The second vessel is a flared vase with a sloped shoulder and cylindrical neck, decorated with a songbird on a flowering branch, butterflies, and a repeating wave border at the rim. The jar features a cream-colored glazed interior and a black-glazed base with no visible maker mark. The vase has a dark-glazed interior and a white-glazed base with a six-character blue underglaze mark reading Dai Nippon Tozan Sei.
Vessel 1: 7.5″ H x 11.5″ W
Vessel 2: 8.75″ H x 10.5″ W

Condition report:

The jar shows significant wear to the foot rim with multiple chips to the black glaze. Both pieces exhibit general surface wear to the enamel decoration and dust accumulation within the textured ground consistent with age. The vase shows visible crazing to the white glaze on the base and minor shelf wear to the unglazed foot rim.
