Description
A square Chinese civil official rank badge (buzi) from the late Qing Dynasty, intricately worked in couched metallic wire on a dark silk ground. The central field features a bird, characteristic of middle-ranking civil officials, perched upon a rocky outcrop and turned toward a circular sun disk. The surrounding field is densely filled with ruyi-shaped clouds and stylized bats, both signifying good fortune and longevity. The lower section of the badge depicts a central stylized mountain peak rising from a lishui border of diagonal turbulent waves. The composition is enclosed within a repeating scrolling cloud border. The metallic threads are worked in gold and silver tones over a silk core. The badge is presented in a gilt-wood frame under glass. Sight Size: 10 1/8 inches x 10 3/4 inches. Frame Size: 12 3/8 inches x 13 1/4 inches.
Location: Bin 30
Condition report:
The item is framed under glass and has not been examined out of the frame. The metallic threads show age-related tarnishing and darkening. There are scattered areas of loose or missing couching threads and minor fraying visible throughout the embroidery. Small orange-red spots, likely the silk core of the metallic wire, are visible where the outer wrap has worn. The frame exhibits minor surface scuffs and a small chip to the gilding on the bottom edge.
