Lot 339:
Description
A pair of high-quality mid-20th-century woodblock prints on paper, being reprints of Utagawa Hiroshige’s (1797–1858) Kanaya: The Far Bank of the Oi River (Kanaya, Oigawa engan). This work is station number 25 from the celebrated series The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido (Tokaido Gojusan-tsugi no uchi). The scene portrays numerous travelers, porters, and a kago navigating the braided, shallow currents of the Oi River with a background of stylized mountains. Each print is signed on the right side Hiroshige ga above a red gourd-shaped artist seal. A vertical red stamp for the Adachi Institute of Woodblock Prints (Zaidan Hojin Adachi Hanga Kenkyujo) is located in the right margin of each sheet, identifying the 20th-century publisher. The top left corner includes the series title and station name, with Oigawa engan in a red cartouche. The reverse of each sheet shows healthy ink bleed-through consistent with the traditional woodblock printing process.
Sheet size: 10 1/4 x 15 1/4 inches.
