Description
This lot consists of a pair of Japanese woodblock prints (nishiki-e) from the celebrated series The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido (Tokaido Gojusan-tsugi) by the ukiyo-e master Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858). Both prints are rendered with ink and color on paper and represent scenes from the Hoeido edition of the series.
The first print depicts Station 35, Fujieda: Changing Porters and Horses (Fujieda, Jinba tsugitate). The scene captures the organized chaos of a post station where travelers exchanged official couriers and pack animals. In the upper left, the title block contains the characters for Tokaido, Gojusan-tsugi, and no uchi, followed by the station name Fujieda. A red rectangular seal below reads Jinba tsugitate. The signature Hiroshige ga is located at the bottom right, accompanied by a red circular seal.
The second print depicts Station 37, Fujikawa: Scene at the Post-station Boundary (Fujikawa, Bohana no zu). The composition shows local officials and residents bowing along the road as a high-ranking procession enters the station. In the upper right, the title block lists the series and station name Fujikawa. A red rectangular seal reads Bohana no zu. The signature Hiroshige ga is visible in the lower left, along with a red circular publisher’s seal for Hoeido.
The prints exhibit high color saturation and are printed on clean, off-white paper, suggesting they are high-quality 20th-century editions produced from recut blocks. The reverse of each sheet shows significant ink bleed-through, confirming the use of traditional woodblock printing techniques.
10 x 15 inches each.
