Description
Attributed to Eliakim Smith (Hadley/Springfield area, Massachusetts, 1735-1775). Queen Anne carved cherrywood high chest of drawers with vine-carved pilasters. The upper section features a bonnet top with a broken-arch pediment surmounted by three spiral-turned finials. The drawer arrangement in the upper case consists of two small drawers flanking a central drawer with a recessed fan or sunburst carving, over four graduated full-width drawers. The lower case contains a single long drawer over three smaller drawers, with the central drawer featuring a matching fan carving. The piece stands on four cabriole legs with scroll-carved ears, ending in pad feet. The apron has a deep-scrolled profile with two acorn-form drop pendants. The drawers are of through-dovetail construction with a light-colored secondary wood, likely white pine. 84″ H x 39″ W x 20″ D.
Condition report:
The highboy exhibits significant wood loss and chipping to the decorative scroll ear on the front-right leg, and smaller wood losses to the scroll ears on at least one other leg. There is visible white residue on the upper portion of one leg. A prominent gouge and wood loss is visible on the front left corner of the mid-molding. The piece shows general surface wear throughout, including various scratches, small dings, and finish inconsistencies consistent with age and use. The brass hardware shows a heavy, aged patina and oxidation. One of the small acorn pendants below the apron on the lower section is damaged and missing its tip. Most drawers exhibit evidence of prior work and dark adhesive/finish from old repairs or filled areas around the joints.
