Description

A pair of white glazed porcelain lidded urns in the Neoclassical style. Each urn features an ovoid body decorated with raised relief swags suspended from circular ring motifs. The zoomorphic handles are modeled as the heads and necks of panthers. The vessels have short, fluted necks and are supported by pedestal bases featuring a foliate leaf border above a Greek key meander pattern at the foot. The domed lids are finished with spherical finials. The pieces are finished in a monochromatic high-gloss white glaze. The underside of one base features a small rectangular gold-tone paper label reading 27845P and adhesive residue from a separate label. The other base has a vertically oriented hand-written paper label with the alphanumeric code H982. Each base has a small circular hole in the center from the manufacturing process. 17" H x 10" W x 8" D.

Location: 24B

Condition report:

Both items exhibit wear consistent with age and use. One feline head handle has a significant repaired break across the upper head and neck with visible brownish adhesive residue at the join. There is a notable chip and loss to a raised relief swag on the body of one urn, which has been partially filled with a yellowish material. A small chip is present on one interior rim. Both urns exhibit multiple scattered yellowish and brownish spots and areas of surface residue across the bodies, pedestals, and lids. The undersides of the pedestals have been altered with the application of black felt protective pads.
