September Uncurated: Art, Furnishings, and Estate Discoveries
Lot 63:
Description
A set of twelve hand-painted porcelain cabinet plates. Each plate features a central portrait depicting either Napoleon I in military uniform or Empress Josephine in royal attire, set against a dark burgundy circular ground. The portraits are hand-signed E. Furlaud in the lower right area. The plates are designed with a wide teal-green border adorned with gilded floral and foliate scrollwork. Four circular vignettes depicting various women in period costume are interspersed within the border decoration. The plates have scalloped edges finished with a gilded band. The undersides of the plates are plain white and lack any visible factory or maker marks. Diameter: 7.5 inches.
Location: 15D
Condition report:
The set exhibits significant condition issues related to the stability of the decorative layers. There is widespread flaking and loss to the dark burgundy enamel and the inner gilded ring surrounding the central portraits, revealing the white porcelain body underneath. Fine crazing is visible within the teal-green glaze on the borders of multiple plates. At least one plate shows a small chip to the underside foot rim. Light surface wear and rubbing to the gilding on the outer scalloped rims are present.
