Lot 92:
Sold for: $60
Description
A pair of framed natural history prints consisting of hand-colored engravings from Johann Wilhelm Weinmann’s 18th-century work, Phytanthoza Iconographia (1737-1745). The first print, identified as Plate 806, depicts a Beta Nigra (Red Mangold or Chard) plant. The second print, Plate 428, is a marine specimen study featuring Corallina Spinosa (spiny coral) and a detailed shell. Both prints are float-mounted on antique laid paper between two panels of glass, housed within contemporary light-toned wood frames. The float mount allows the naturally deckled and aged edges of the paper to remain visible. Sight: 14 x 9 in. Framed: 24 x 19 1/8 in.
Location: Bin 30
Condition report:
Both prints exhibit significant, age-appropriate toning and yellowing to the paper. Scattered foxing spots are visible across both sheets. Plate 428 shows a distinct vertical crease or fold line on the right side of the sheet. Ghosting of text and ink bleed from an adjacent page is visible on the reverse of the marine print. The prints are secured to the rear glass panel with visible strips of adhesive tape at the top and bottom edges. The wooden frames show minor scuffs and wear consistent with handling.
