Description
Lithograph on textile, likely silk, produced for the 1937 coronation of King Edward VIII. The central medallion portrait of the monarch is flanked by military vignettes of a battleship, biplanes, and heavy artillery against a Union Jack background. Housed in a gilt frame under glass. Frame: 24 3/4 x 35 1/2 x 7/8 in.
From the personal collection of Peter Benchley (American, 1940–2006), acclaimed author of Jaws, accomplished diver, and prominent advocate for ocean and shark conservation.
Condition report:
The textile displays significant foxing and brown staining throughout the central portrait and surrounding white fields. General toning is present across the fabric. The gilt frame shows minor handling wear and scattered surface abrasions.
