The Peter Benchley Collection: Jaws, A Life of Writing, A Legacy of Stories
Lot 282:
Description
Ancient Roman glass unguentarium featuring a flared rim, a long cylindrical neck with a slight constriction at the base, and a conical body terminating in a flattened bottom. The surface displays significant archaeological weathering and mineralization, resulting in a dense layer of multi-colored iridescence with aqua, gold, and violet hues. Small patches of earthy encrustation and oxidation are visible across the exterior. 4 1/2" H x 1 5/8" diameter.
From the personal collection of Peter Benchley (American, 1940–2006), acclaimed author of Jaws, accomplished diver, and prominent advocate for ocean and shark conservation.
Condition report:
The unguentarium is in archaeological condition and remains structurally sound. The form is intact with no visible cracks, chips, or losses to the glass. The exterior displays heavy surface degradation, oxidation, and mineral deposits consistent with long-term burial. The iridescence is well-preserved across the body and neck.
