The Peter Benchley Collection: Jaws, A Life of Writing, A Legacy of Ocean Conservation.
Lot 145:
Description
Vintage original Jaws promotional T-shirt in orange cotton jersey, featuring a white screen-printed graphic on the front. Tagged Sportswear size S 34-36.
Not the crew shirt Spielberg handed out on the set (see Lot 147), but the one that came next. When JAWS opened in 1975, the studio’s promotion carried the same shark that rises from the theater standee in Lot 144, and Peter kept this bright orange shirt from that summer, when his shark was suddenly everywhere.
From the personal collection of Peter Benchley (American, 1940–2006), acclaimed author of Jaws, accomplished diver, and prominent advocate for ocean and shark conservation.
Proceeds from the Peter Benchley Collection will benefit five ocean conservation organizations: Peter Benchley Ocean Awards, WildAid, Beneath the Waves, Blue Frontier and Environmental Defense Fund.
Condition report:
The garment shows visible signs of age and wear. Three small holes are present on the lower front left side. The screen-printed graphic exhibits minor age-related cracking and fading but remains legible. The fabric shows general softening and light pilling.
