The display features a central chromogenic color print depicting a scuba diver in dark gear working beside a submerged vertical post. Four printed instructional cards are adhered to the panel. These include a red label detailing the depth of treasure galleons and two cards explaining the electrolytic action that affects silver artifacts in seawater. One card includes three mounted physical mineralized samples illustrating the transition of silver into black silver sulfide. Frame: 20 1/2" L x 14" W x 1/2" D.
A personal note from Wendy Benchley: “This photo was also part of the traveling exhibition by Bob Page that explained the intricacies of uncovering wrecks and identifying artifacts. Peter bought the exhibit from Bob Page’s widow, and some of the artifacts in Peter’s collection came from this exhibit.”
From the personal collection of Peter Benchley (American, 1940–2006), acclaimed author of Jaws, accomplished diver, and prominent advocate for ocean and shark conservation.
Proceeds from the Peter Benchley Collection will benefit five ocean conservation organizations: Peter Benchley Ocean Awards, WildAid, Beneath the Waves, Blue Frontier and Environmental Defense Fund.
Condition report:
The central chromogenic print displays a heavy color shift toward cyan and blue tones consistent with age. A small piece of tape residue is adhered to the outer surface of the glass near the diver\'s hand. The black frame shows light scuffing and minor paint loss at the corners and edges. The verso exhibits significant brown staining from aged adhesive and deteriorating, brittle masking tape across the backing board.
