The Peter Benchley Collection: Jaws, A Life of Writing, A Legacy of Stories
Lot 280:
Description
Two ancient artifacts of varying materials and archaeological types. The first is a large, dark ovoid stone tool, possibly a celt or pestle. It features a smooth, polished surface with a rounded form, exhibiting scattered natural mineral inclusions and surface abrasions consistent with burial and use. The second object is a socketed metal projectile point, likely a spearhead, featuring a leaf-shaped blade with a pronounced central rib. The piece is constructed from a copper alloy, appearing as bronze, and exhibits a heavily oxidized surface with significant mineral encrustation. Stone: 6" L x 2 1/2" W. Spearhead: 5" L.
From the personal collection of Peter Benchley (American, 1940–2006), acclaimed author of Jaws, accomplished diver, and prominent advocate for ocean and shark conservation.
Condition report:
The stone tool shows scattered white surface marks and minor abrasions throughout. The metal point exhibits heavy oxidation with extensive green verdigris and reddish-brown rust encrustation over its entire surface. The socket end appears irregular with some loss to the metal at the base.
