Description

Two Japanese woodblock prints attributed to Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858). The first is a horizontal bird-and-flower study depicting a hawk perched on a snow-covered pine branch with red berries. This print includes a vertical signature in Japanese script and a circular red artist seal on the right edge. The second is a vertical scene depicting three figures in traditional attire. This print features a vertical signature in the lower-left corner and a small yellow rectangular cartouche identifying a character or role. Both works are polychrome woodblock prints on paper, with the reverse of each sheet showing characteristic ink bleed-through and evidence of past mounting. Larger sheet 9 1/2 x 6 inches.

Condition report:

Both prints show signs of age-related wear including overall toning of the paper and fading of the colors. Foxing and surface soiling are present throughout, particularly along the margins. The reverse of the sheets shows thinning and adhesive residue at the corners from previous mounting.
