Description
Two early framed needlework samplers. The first is a large rectangular herbal and animal sampler executed in embroidery and cross-stitch on a white woven ground. The second is a smaller vertical patriotic sampler featuring blue cross-stitched text reading THE STARS AND STRIPES FOREVER surrounded by embroidered red stars. Both unsigned. Patriotic Sampler Frame: 10" H x 8" W. Herbal Sampler Frame: 12" H x 25 1/4" W.
From the Woodstock, New York estate of music manager Albert Grossman, best known for managing artists including Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, The Band, and Peter, Paul and Mary.
Condition report:
The herbal sampler shows significant age-related foxing and brown staining throughout the background fabric, particularly along the upper and lower margins. The paper backing on the verso displays a large vertical water stain. The gilt frame has minor scuffs and wear to the finish. The patriotic sampler shows mild yellowing of the fabric with scattered spots of foxing. The wooden frame has several scuffs, scratches, and minor losses to the finish. Its paper backing is severely deteriorated, torn, and partially missing.
