Description
R.J. Horner style late Victorian circular pedestal dining table constructed of quartersawn oak. The 61-inch diameter top showcases highly figured tiger oak grain with prominent medullary ray flecks. A deep apron wraps the circumference, decorated with a heavily carved border of acanthus leaves and gadrooning. The top is supported by a massive split-pedestal central column flanked by four hand-carved winged griffins. Each figure is detailed with feathered wings, curved necks, and leonine bodies transitioning into volute-scrolled bases. The griffins rest upon a four-point platform base ending in hairy claw feet over metal casters. Includes an original extension leaf. 30″ H x 61″ diameter. 88″ L with extension leaf.
Condition report:
Good antique condition with wear consistent with age and use. Significant scuffing, chipping, and finish loss are present on the square blocks of the feet and the lower edges of the platform base. Minor chips are noted on the carved toes of the claw feet. The tabletop and leaves show general surface scratches and age-appropriate wear. The central pedestal column has a seam where it splits to accommodate extensions. The metal casters exhibit oxidation and wear.
