Description
Pair of Renaissance Revival side chairs. The frames feature rectangular seat and back panels upholstered in brown leather, secured by oversized, rounded, patinated metal upholstery tacks. The back stiles extend into upright carved finials featuring acanthus leaf motifs. The front legs are joined by a wide, elaborately carved stretcher centered with a floral rosette and flanked by scrolling foliage. The chairs terminate in detailed lion’s paw feet, while the remaining stretchers are simple square-section members. 41" H x 16" W x 17 1/2" D. Seat height 19 in.
From the Woodstock, New York estate of music manager Albert Grossman, best known for managing artists including Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, The Band, and Peter, Paul and Mary.
Condition report:
Upholstery on one chair exhibits severe condition issues, including extensive cracking, large tears, and peeling that exposes the underlying padding, necessitating full reupholstery. The second chair shows moderate surface wear, creasing, and cracking to the leather. Wood frames are structurally sound but show typical age-related wear, including nicks, scratches, and finish loss. White wax residue or accretion is visible on the base of several legs. Dust and cobwebs are present on the undersides.
