Description

Jacobean joined oak blanket chest or coffer constructed of solid oak. The piece features traditional frame-and-panel construction with three recessed panels on the front and single panels on each side. The frame is assembled with pinned mortise-and-tenon joinery visible on the stiles and rails. The heavy two-plank solid oak lid is finished with a thumb-molded edge. The front stiles and rails are decorated with chip-carved geometric patterns featuring a recurring bullseye motif within incised rectangular borders. The vertical stiles extend down to form the legs. Hardware includes early iron wire staple hinges and a heart-shaped iron keyhole escutcheon centered on the top front rail. 23 1/2" H x 41" W x 18 1/2" D.

From the Woodstock, New York estate of music manager Albert Grossman, best known for managing artists including Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, The Band, and Peter, Paul and Mary.

Condition report:

The chest is in fair antique condition with significant signs of age and use. A prominent vertical split is visible in the left front panel and gapping is present between the backboards. The lid has extensive scratching, staining, and surface wear. There are scattered nicks and chips to the molded edges. The dark finish shows significant wear, particularly on the legs and carved areas. The lock mechanism is missing, and the iron hinges show oxidation.
