Description
17th Century joined oak coffer or blanket chest. This chest is constructed from solid oak using traditional mortise and tenon joinery secured with visible wooden pegs. The design follows early English or Continental traditions with a dark-stained finish. 27" H x 52" W x 22" D.
From the Woodstock, New York estate of music manager Albert Grossman, best known for managing artists including Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, The Band, and Peter, Paul and Mary.
Condition report:
The coffer is in aged condition with significant wear and structural issues to the lid. The four-panel lid exhibits multiple deep longitudinal cracks and separations across the panels. Substantial losses, splintering, and chips are present along the molded edges of the lid, particularly at the front corners. The exterior surfaces show a weathered patina throughout with scattered stains, scuffs, and indentations consistent with age. Gaps are visible at the joints where panels meet the frame due to historical wood shrinkage. The iron lock plate and the detached strap hinge show heavy oxidation and surface rust.
