Description

Myra Hess (British, 1890-1965). Autograph letter signed and black-and-white photograph framed display. The single-page handwritten note is executed on light blue stationery with printed letterhead for 48 Wildwood Road, N.W.11., and is dated June 5, 1951. The text concerns a request for programs from a performance at the Pump Room in Bath and remarks on the quality of the audience. A profile portrait photograph of the pianist is mounted alongside the letter.

The display is professionally mounted in a black mat featuring silver-plated inner borders. A window on the verso reveals the original handwritten mailing envelope addressed to Arthur A. Lewis at the Pump Room in Bath, bearing a Golders Green postmark dated June 5, 1951, and an orange King George VI 2d postage stamp. The items are housed in a gold-finished wooden frame with hanging wire attached to the reverse.

Signed Myra Hess on the note. 13 1/2" H x 18" W.

Condition report:

The handwritten note shows light horizontal and vertical creasing consistent with original mailing. The blue paper tint exhibits minor fading. The portrait photograph is well-preserved. The wooden frame displays minor surface wear and rubbing to the corners.
