Willow Auction House is proud to present our Fall Great Estates Curated Auction. Featuring nearly 200 lots of books, artwork, furniture and ethnographic items, the sale will take place on October 6, 2022, at noon Eastern time. Absentee and internet live bidding will be available through our website, Liveauctioneers, Invaluable, Bidsquare, Hibid, and Bidspirit.

A portion of the sale is dedicated to a selection of books from the estate of a New York City collector. Featuring first editions as well as original serialized magazine printings, this extensive collection features many notable authors, including Charles Dickens, H.G. Wells, Thomas Hardy, Charlotte Bronte, Anthony Trollope, George Eliot and William Makepeace Thackeray. Among the works by Dickens are first editions of several of the author’s most well-known titles, including A Christmas Carol, circa 1843;

Oliver Twist, 1838 and an 1857 copy of Little Dorrit with a signed card from Dickens tipped in. Also included are several titles in their original serialized parts, most notably Nicholas Nickleby, published from 1838-39, and Bleak House, originally published in 1852-53. The collection also includes a letter from Dickens dated 1850, and several sketches by George Cruikshank, who illustrated many of Dickens’ works.

Other notable first editions include H.G. Wells’ War of the Worlds, a selection of works by George Eliot (Mary Ann Evans) including a four volume Middlemarch, and a copy of Lytton Strachey’s Eminent Victorians that contains a letter signed by Florence Nightingale.

Beyond books, the Fall Great Estates Auction also features a large selection of artwork. Among the highlights, a signed Andy Warhol “Cow” Screenprint on wallpaper, originally published in 1976 for an exhibition at the Modern Art Pavilion in Seattle, and a watercolor and charcoal New York City cityscape by David Burliuk (lot 35, estimated $3,000-5,000). Also included in the sale is a large oil on canvas by Polish artist Alfred Kowalski (lot 66, estimated $40,000-60,000). Depicting a troika with wolves in pursuit, the painting is a fine example of the subject matter Kowalski was known for.

Also included are oil paintings by William Merritt Chase (lot 60, estimated $4,000-5,000) and Hermann Herzog (lot 64, estimated $2,000-3,000).

For bidders looking for furniture, the sale also features a variety of pieces including English campaign chests, oak barrister bookcases, and a selection of mid-century modern furniture from designers like Edward Wormley, Jens Risom, Eero Saarinen, Harry Bertoia for Knoll and Paul Evans. Additionally, several pieces by German designer Tommi Parzinger, including a chair and ottoman, two floor lamps (lot 51, estimated $1,000-2,000 and lot 52, estimated $600-800, and a wall unit attributed to Parzinger (lot 53, estimated $1,000-1,500).

Other highlights of the Fall Great Estates Curated Auction include a land sale document dated 1679-1680 and signed by the fourth mayor of New York City, Cornelius Steenwyk (lot 189, estimated $2,000-3,000), an Ottoman silver scribe’s case (lot 193, estimated $500-700), a large Franz Bergman Austrian cold painted bronze, and a signed letter from Senator Robert F. Kennedy to cartoonist Bill Mauldin (lot 186, estimated $300-500).
