Description
A neoclassical revival fireplace screen constructed from cast and pierced gilt brass. The piece features a central decorative stand housing nine folding fan blades in a peacock-style arrangement. Each blade is intricately pierced with stylized patterns. The central post is ornamented with a cast relief of a dancing female figure holding a tambourine within an arched, draped framework. The base is decorated with a satyr or Bacchus mask on a shield-shaped element, flanked by foliate scrolls, and stands on three feet. The top of the stand includes a manual latch to secure the blades in a closed position and is crowned with a tiered rectangular pedestal and a cast finial. 30″ H x 11″ W x 8 1/2″ D. Location: 4D
Condition report:
The fireplace screen is in good condition overall. The brass displays an aged patina with areas of surface oxidation and darkening in the recessed details of the casting. Minor surface scratches and wear consistent with age and use are visible. The folding mechanism and top latch are functional.
