Description
Group of 22 antique primitive iron, copper, and wood hearth and kitchen utensils including a Marshalltown hand float. The collection includes fireplace equipment such as a log cradle, a small rusted kettle, a Betty style oil lamp with a curved hanging rod, spring tongs, and a pair of wick trimmer scissors with a rectangular box. Long-handled utensils include ladles and skimmers with solid and perforated bowls, a wire skimmer, a flat-bladed peel, two forks, and a spatula, most featuring hand-forged circular hanging loops. A circular copper pan features a perforated lid and brass handle with a latch mechanism. Additional pieces include a wooden block pulley, a small hammer or adze, and a single horseshoe. The hand float is stamped on the metal plate MARSHALLTOWN. The remaining items are unsigned. Largest piece (pipe kiln): 8" H x 13" W x 6" D.
From the Woodstock, New York estate of music manager Albert Grossman, best known for managing artists including Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, The Band, and Peter, Paul and Mary.
Condition report:
Items are in as-found primitive condition consistent with age and heavy use. Wrought and cast iron pieces exhibit significant surface rust, pitting, and oxidation throughout (Photos 3, 9, 10). The copper pan displays dark oxidation and green verdigris (Photo 5). The wooden handle of the hand float is split with wood loss at one end (Photo 4). The pulley exhibits surface wear, scratches, and patina to the wood and metal components (Photo 6).
