Description

Guadalupe Hermosillo Escobar (Mexican, b. 1962). Wrought iron house cross. The flat iron bars are hand-hammered and finished with a repeating stamped crescent motif. A cutout bird in flight surmounts the vertical post, which also features two multi-petaled rosettes. The horizontal crossbar is decorated with a sun face on the right and a crescent moon face on the left. A set of suspended balance scales with fine chain links hangs below the center. Additional symbolic elements include a ladder on the left, a winged angelic figure on the right, and a serpent coiling upward around the central post. The assembly is secured with hand-hammered rivets and terminates in a scrolling V-shaped frame at the base. Unsigned. 30" H x 19" W.

From the Woodstock, New York estate of music manager Albert Grossman, best known for managing artists including Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, The Band, and Peter, Paul and Mary.

Condition report:

Uniform surface oxidation and heavy rust throughout, consistent with age and intended use. The metal shows minor surface pitting. All riveted joins, chains, and suspended elements remain secure and intact.
