Tony Walton (British, 1934-2022). Uncle Vanya. Group of 4 pieces original costume design artwork, mixed media with gouache and ink on paper. Characters including Vanya (Nicol Williamson), Marina (Lillian Gish), Helena (Julie Christie) and Astrov (George C. Scott). All initialed TW in ink, and titled and with handwritten title and character names. Helena with attached fabric swatches and additional handwritten notations in pencil. Vanya with typed label on the mat. Marina, Helena and Astrov all with handwritten inscriptions to Mike Nichols in ink (Nichols directed the show); "For MN with love & thanks", "It was the best time Mike. All love to you & Anna – Tone", "For Mike Love Tone". Helena sheet 18" x 11 7/8" (with mat and mount 20" x 16 1/8"). All as is and in production used condition. Created by Tony Walton for the Broadway production of Uncle Vanya, Circle in the Square Theatre, 1973. Tony Walton designed both the sets and costumes for the production, and later did the same for the 2000 revival of the show. Mike Nichols, George C. Scott and Nicol Williamson were all nominated for Tony Awards in 1974 for their work on the show, and Williamson won the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Performance that year.
