Tony Walton (British, 1934-2022). A Tale of Two Cities. 3 portfolios containing original set design artwork and prints, reference and research materials, notes and other papers. Portfolio 1: 4 Gold Metallic Thread pencil and gold ink on tracing paper sketches with additional copies of the same image, 3 cobblestone detail color prints, 3 prints of model scaffolding, folder containing design materials for stars including original gold ink and gouache on black paper and many photocopies, 9 theater interior photos, ground plan. Portfolio 2: 2 folders containing design materials for horses including pencil sketch on tracing paper and paper and brass fastener models, folder of title / logo designs including original on tracing paper and several copies with hand changes, ground plan for the Asolo Rep, research / reference materials, sketch for guillotine with copies with hand changes, set of guillotine prints with various shadows, folder labeled "finale ideas" including finale translucency pencil sketch on tracing paper. Portfolio 3: Asolo Rep promotional materials including poster, flyers, investor materials; 18 prints and color copies of various backdrops, folder containing ground plans and copies of other technical drawings for the Asolo and Hirschfeld, folder containing materials for title blocks for ground plans; folder and envelope containing 20+ original rough sketches and many copies, research materials, notes and other papers. Larger Asolo poster 14" x 22". All as is and in production used condition. Created by Tony Walton for the Broadway production of A Tale of Two Cities, Al Hirschfeld Theatre, 2008. The show opened at the Asolo Repertory Theatre in Florida before moving to Broadway. Though he would continue working as a director and occasional designer for off-Broadway, regional and ballet productions, A Tale of Two Cities was Tony Walton’s final Broadway show.
