Description
This Japanese woodblock print by Utagawa Kunisato (active mid-19th century) depicts two women engaged in the traditional process of sericulture. One figure is shown kneeling and using a small tool to tend to silkworm eggs on a long sheet of paper held over a rectangular tray, while a second woman stands behind her. The artwork features a red cartouche with calligraphic text in the upper left corner. The artist’s signature is written vertically on the right side as Gosen-tei Kunisato ga, positioned above a circular artist seal. The print is mounted onto a light blue paper backing.

Condition report:
The print exhibits significant condition issues including widespread foxing and brown staining throughout the background. There is overall toning of the paper and visible fading of the pigments. The print has been mounted to a blue paper backing which shows some wear along the top and bottom edges.
