Description
A large circular porcelain cabinet charger featuring a vibrant turquoise Bleu Celeste ground. The centerpiece consists of a hand-painted portrait medallion depicting King Louis XVI in a purple coat with the star of the Order of the Holy Spirit. The central image is surrounded by eight smaller circular medallions, each containing a hand-painted portrait of a prominent woman from the 18th-century French court and literary circles. The sitters, identified by handwritten script on the reverse, include Marie Leszczynska, Marie Antoinette, Marie Josephine of Savoy (Comtesse de Provence), Madame du Boccage, Madame de Genlis, Dumoulin, the Duchess of Berry, and Madame de Montesson. 2″ H x 18 1/2″ diameter.
Condition report:
The charger shows a chip to the outer edge of the turquoise rim. A fine hairline crack or deep scratch is visible on the exterior side of the rim near the chipped area. The inner foot ring on the reverse has a significant chip. The underside displays considerable surface wear, staining, and discoloration to both the glazed and unglazed portions. There is minor rubbing and shelf wear to the gilded decoration on the top surface. Several adhesive felt protector pads are attached to the base.
