Description
After Antonio Canova (Italian, 1757-1822). Large alabaster sculpture, Psyche revived by Cupid’s Kiss. The figures are set upon an integral, rough-hewn rocky base detailed with carved draped fabric. The sculpture is executed in a translucent, cream-colored alabaster that shows characteristic natural veining. No artist signatures, foundry marks, or inscriptions are visible on the piece. 24″ H x 29″ W x 12″ D.
Condition report:
The sculpture exhibits several significant condition issues and old repairs. There is a visible full crack through Cupid’s lower right leg just above the ankle. A horizontal break with an old adhesive repair is present across the upper section of Cupid’s right wing. The big toe on Psyche\'s right foot also shows a break and a visible old adhesive repair. The surface of the alabaster displays extensive yellow and brown spotting and staining throughout. The integral rocky base shows minor chipping and wear consistent with age, and small nicks and surface abrasions are scattered across the figures and drapery.
