August Uncurated Summer Auction
Lot 25:
Description
A pair of decorative four-light ceramic candelabra. Each piece is modeled with a central stem resembling a tree trunk, adorned with two applied birds featuring gilded heads and wings. The candelabra are further decorated with winding grapevines carrying clusters of grapes and orange-tinted leaves. Each candelabrum has three scrolling arms and a central light, all topped with candle cups and drip pans featuring a textured, pinecone or scale-like pattern. The pieces stand on a tripod-style base with flared scroll feet and gilded highlights. The ceramic body features a clear, heavy crackle glaze throughout. The underside of one base features a mark in blue ink reading VIII. 20 1/2″ H x 11 1/4″ W. Location: 4C
Condition report:
There is flaking and loss of the decorative surface layer and glaze, particularly on the arms and where the vines meet the trunk. Crazing is heavy throughout both pieces. Both candelabra show evidence of significant old structural repairs at the junctions where the branches meet the central stem, with visible gaps filled with aged adhesive and shims. There are minor chips to the delicate applied elements and evidence of old adhesive residue on the undersides of the bases.
