August Uncurated Summer Auction
Lot 250:
Sold for: $60
Description
A pair of matching figural bookends depicting stylized musicians in theatrical costumes, reminiscent of Pierrot or Harlequin figures. The figures and logs are cast in spelter with a gold-toned patinated finish and are mounted on rectangular onyx bases. The undersides retain central mounting screws. 6″ H x 4″ W x 4″ D. Location: 14C
Condition report:
The bookends show signs of age and use consistent with the Art Deco period. There is visible wear to the gold-toned finish on both figures, particularly on high-relief areas such as the noses, hands, instruments, and knees, exposing the gray base metal beneath. The onyx bases have several small chips and flea bites along the sharp edges and corners. Natural internal fissures are visible in the stone. One base is missing its original felt protective pads.
