Description

This bronze sculpture represents a dancing Silenus, a figure from Greek mythology associated with wine and revelry. The figure is depicted with a grapevine crown and an animal skin loincloth, captured mid-stride with his right arm raised holding a shallow bowl and his left hand grasping a pointed wine vessel. A small tail is visible at the lower back. The circular integral base is signed M. Lindenberg in cursive script. The work is mounted on a heavy, tiered architectural plinth composed of black marble with red-veined marble corner blocks. The sculpture features a dark brown patina. 19 x 5 x 4 in. Location: 8B

Condition report:

The marble base exhibits a prominent chip on the upper edge of the black tier and several smaller chips and flea bites along the corners and lower edges. The bronze casting shows light surface dust and minor oxidation and verdigris within the deeper crevices. The underside shows typical wear to the stone and mounting hardware, with one missing felt pad.
