A Napoleon III period inkstand constructed with Boulle marquetry featuring brass and red tortoiseshell-effect inlay over a wooden frame. The rectangular stand is accented with gilt-metal mounts, including four corner feet in the form of mascarons and foliate side appliques. The top features a large, recessed pen tray and three upper compartments. One compartment contains a circular brass inkwell with a screw-top lid, and another contains a brush. The central compartment remains empty. The decorative inlay is arranged in ornate foliate scroll patterns across the top and sides. The underside reveals the wooden construction of the base. 4″ H x 10 1/2″ W x 7 1/2″ D. Location: 8C
Condition report:
The inkstand exhibits significant condition issues consistent with age and use. There are extensive losses to the Boulle marquetry inlay on multiple surfaces, revealing the white substrate beneath. A large horizontal crack extends across the entire wooden base. The gilt-metal mounts show surface tarnishing and oxidation. One original inkwell is missing from the upper compartments. The piece shows general surface wear and an accumulation of dust in all recesses.
