Description
A contemporary William and Mary style chest of drawers produced by Alfonso Marina in Mexico City. This model, identified on the manufacturer label as the Comoda Brighton II, features a configuration of two short drawers over three long graduated drawers. The piece is constructed with dark-stained hardwood surfaces extensively decorated with multi-tonal wood marquetry inlays depicting floral arrangements and birds on the top, drawer fronts, and side panels. Hardware includes brass teardrop pulls with floral-form backplates and matching brass escutcheons. The case is raised on four large, turned bun feet. Drawer construction features machine-cut dovetail joinery. The reverse of the chest bears a paper manufacturer label dated October 2, 2003, along with an inset brass AM medallion. 38.25 inches x 36 inches x 20 inches. Condition report:
The piece is in good overall condition. There is significant vertical splitting and checking of the veneer along the base molding. Minor surface scratches and light wear are visible on the top and finished surfaces consistent with residential use. Scuffing is present on the bun feet. All marquetry inlays appear to be intact.
