Description
This tall-back armchair is a 20th-century revival piece constructed of dark-stained mahogany. The design features a serpentine crest rail centered by a hand-carved sun motif with a human face and radiating rays accented by remnant gilding. The back consists of a complex pierced splat with interlaced Gothic arches and foliate carvings. The out-scrolled arms terminate in carved knuckles and are supported by curved uprights with leaf-motif carvings. The chair stands on straight square front legs featuring incised blind-fretwork and raked rear legs, all connected by a square H-stretcher. The seat is upholstered in a gold-colored velvet with a wavy, textured pattern and finished with a matching cord trim. 58″ H x 29″ W x 20.5″ D. Seat height 18.5 inches. This lot is located offsite in Rumson, New Jersey and will be available for PICKUP ONLY. Condition report:
The chair exhibits visible finish wear and scuffing, particularly along the front legs and the edges of the blind-fretwork carving. There are minor surface scratches and wear to the armrests consistent with use. The upholstery is intact but shows signs of light wear and minor staining. Three circular white felt protective pads are adhered to the rear of the top crest rail. The joinery appears structurally sound.
