Description
A Louis XVI style three-drawer commode manufactured by Mastro Cappellini. The exterior features elaborate book-matched rosewood and kingwood parquetry in a diamond pattern. Decorative fruitwood marquetry is utilized for the central oval medallions on the top and drawer fronts, which depict classical figurative scenes in landscape settings, as well as floral motifs on the stiles and legs. The chest contains three drawers featuring oak secondary wood and dovetail joinery. The drawers are fitted with four oval gilt-metal pulls decorated with relief-cast scenes of a classical woman and cherub. A rectangular brass maker’s plaque is located on the lower right front corner. The back of the piece is constructed with a finished composite panel. 36″ H x 50″ W x 21″ D.
Condition report:
The commode exhibits multiple areas of significant veneer loss and chipping, particularly on the front edges of the frame and the corners of the drawer fronts. Horizontal cracks are visible in the oak sides of the drawers. There is general surface wear, including scratches and abrasions to the high-polish finish throughout.
