Description

An American Classical mahogany and giltwood pier table, or console table, dating from the early nineteenth century. The piece features a rectangular white marble top with light gray veining resting upon a mahogany-veneered frieze. The frieze is decorated with a central carved floral and scrollwork mount. The front of the table is supported by two bold, S-scroll legs finished in gilding and adorned with acanthus leaf carvings. These legs terminate in stylized feet on a mahogany-veneered shaped plinth base. A mirrored backplate is positioned behind the scroll supports. 37″ H x 27″ W x 13″ D.

Condition report:

The table exhibits condition issues consistent with age. There is extensive loss of gesso and gold leaf on both front scroll legs, revealing the underlying substrate. Remaining gilding is flaking in several areas. The mirrored backplate shows significant foxing and degradation of the silvering, primarily around the perimeter. A chip is visible in the mahogany veneer on the lower right corner of the frieze block. The plinth base displays scattered surface scratches and minor scuffs. The marble top has light surface staining and minor scratches throughout.
