Description
A pair of five-tier graduated corner whatnots, or etageres, crafted in a traditional Victorian Revival style. The units are constructed from dark-stained hardwood and consist of five fixed, open shelves that decrease in size toward the top. The structure is supported by turned spindle uprights and accented with decorative finials. These pieces are of single-body construction and are not modular or sectional. Each shelf features a curved front apron and a low gallery rail along the rear corner edges of the upper tiers. The units are supported by short, turned feet. Each unit 51″ H x 17″ W x 16″ D.
Condition report:
The pair shows signs of significant wear consistent with age and use. There is widespread finish loss, scuffing, and scratching, particularly evident on the shelf surfaces and front aprons. Chipping and splintering are present along the bottom edge of one shelf apron. A visible chip is noted on the gallery edge of one top shelf. Minor nicks and finish wear are present on the turned spindles and decorative finials throughout. Each frame is slightly wobbly.
