Description

Color photographic print, Jaws film still (Universal, 1975). Chief Brody climbing the sinking mast of the Orca during the film’s climax. Frame: 14 3/8" H x 11 3/8" W x 1/2" D.

Chief Brody climbs the mast of the sinking Orca to take his last shot at the shark, the climax of the film. Edith Blake was close enough to this part of the shoot to be knocked backwards when the shark exploded.

The Edith Blake photographs (Lots 129 – 131)

Edith Blake (1925–2023) wrote and took pictures for the Vineyard Gazette and had insider access to the JAWS set throughout the summer of 1974. Her photographs, long circulated as anonymous production stills, are credited to her here. They are in color, with the warm patina of fifty years.

From the personal collection of Peter Benchley (American, 1940–2006), acclaimed author of Jaws, accomplished diver, and prominent advocate for ocean and shark conservation.

Proceeds from the Peter Benchley Collection will benefit five ocean conservation organizations: Peter Benchley Ocean Awards, WildAid, Beneath the Waves, Blue Frontier and Environmental Defense Fund.

Condition report:

A horizontal crease or deep scratch is visible along the lower portion of the print. The color saturation shows age-appropriate softening throughout the image. The frame exhibits minor surface scuffing but remains structurally sound. The backing board and spring clips are intact and functional. Good vintage condition.
